The New Shadow of Protest

Since the morality police in Iran killed Khurdish Mahsa Amini for wearing her hijab incorrectly in September, Iranian diaspora around the world took to the streets to denounce the Islamic Republic’s actions. Are they echoing the Iranians protesting despite arrests and executions in the motherland? Or is social media widening the gap between Iran and its diaspora?

Azadeh Moaveni describes growing up in California under the shadow of the bearded, hostage taking Iranian revolutionary in her book Lipstick Jihad. Now there is a new image of the Iranian protester in the global consciousness, and she isn’t bearded.
